Ad: Miller High Life (With Emphasis on the High Part)

Yeah they were High in 1952 all right...

Another Friday, another vintage alcohol ad. I'm not really in the mood for a cocktail today, just too damn hot outside. So instead I'll have a beer. Normally I'd be drinking something European, Chimay, Dortmunder, Czechvar etc but it's not normal today. No, because money is an issue my days of walking into ABC and leaving with an $11 6-pack of Old Speckled Hen are quite over. I've sampled my way around the macro-brews here in the USA and only one really met my demands.

I really don't know what's going on in the ad above, to me it looks like Dr Suess meets the Brothers Grimm... or one of Timothy Leory's acid trips. Reguardless of the phantasmagoic imagery everything is fine because we have beer... beer in schooners on the table, beer in a bucket on the floor. It doesn't matter if our wife is serving us broiled pygmy leg while bambi stares at us from wall because we have beer and life is good.

Miller gets a bad reputation because of Miller Light. All light beer is swill in my opinion and what the point of drinking if you're just going to drink piss water? I've tried Miller Genuine Draft (MGD) and found it had a bitter/sour taste in the mix I was not fond of. It wasn't a skunked batch, but just had an off taste. So this inevitably led me to Miller High Life. Always marketed as the Champagne of Beers it's not heavy in the taste depatment but it is smooth. Very smooth. Bonus in that they don't seem to have changed the labels since 1952.

  1. You know, you're completely right; that 1950s ad is confusing as hell.
